“The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it’s indifference. And, the opposite of life is not death, it’s indifference. Because of indifference one dies before one actually dies” (Elie Wiesel).
This year I am proud to say that I have joined the North Peninsula Jewish Teen Foundation’s (NPJTF) 2017-2018 board. NPJTF is a 16 year old program of the Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund. Our board is made up 24 teens who want to make a change in our world through research, collecting funds, and eventually donating them. The work that we are doing is meaningful and important, not just to me but to everyone we hope to help.
This year NPJTF aims to promote positive social change by protecting the environment and responding to the needs of people affected by environmental problems locally, globally, and in Israel. Through research, we have discovered that:
- As of September 5, 2017, Hurricane Harvey damaged 203,000 homes, of which 12,700 were destroyed. There were 738,000 people who registered for assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The agency has paid $378 million to them.
- 2.2 billion tons of waste are dumped into the ocean every year
- Uganda’s 2,000 Jews (Abayudaya) have long maintained a modest existence. Thus relying on their own crops to survive, have been hit hard by the drought, leaving most of the community without food for long periods of time.
Thank you so much for supporting the NPJTF board. Your contribution will go a long way towards helping the environment and those affected by environmental issues.
