Alejandro has a home!
We worked hard this week and got the casita completed. The dedication and handing off of the keys happened just this afternoon (March 27). The funding has not all been contributed yet, but we stepped out in faith and got it done. Next week we will be dropping off a bed, a small sofa, a radio (his request), some clothing, and some other items. It is not too late to be part of this blessing. Consider donating today. Thank you to our donors, including those of you who are about to donate. :-)
Alejandro Guerra Vega, age 94, is a man who has worked his entire life. As a younger man he served as a Mexican Marine, and the majority of his adult life he has worked playing the guitar for the tourists at the port, until his hands gave out. He receives $2,000 pesos a month from his pension which is about $100 dollars a month. He gets a little help from his son Ruben and his grandson Isaac. This is all that he has, other than help from others, to sustain himself. He has a small parcel of land in a poor area of Ensenada, Baja California Mexico that currently has a dilapidated travel trailer on it and a makeshift shed. The shed is made of pallets and other scrap material, and the roof leaks badly. The elderly gentleman has a great attitude, and he simply said (in Spanish) "When it rains outside, it also rains inside". There is a wonderful dignity about this man, and he has lived with this situation for a long time. He has no idea how much more time he has on this earth, but we feel that he deserves to have a warm, comfortable, weather proof home to live out his days. We plan to tear down the old structure, haul away the debris, clean up the lot, and build him a simple casita to replace the leaky shed that is close to falling down. This will be framed with lumber, built on a concrete slab, have drywall, insulation, electrical wiring, aluminum sliding windows, and a 36" entry door with entry lock and deadbolt. .It will be small and basic, but be a very pleasant and comfortable place for him. This will also be built with local labor, so it will provide work for local workers. We are raising $4,000 to pay for the lot clean up, demolition of the shack, concrete slab, and building of the new structure. Baja Power and Light Ministries is contributing an additional $1,000 for additional interior improvements and furnishings. Consider making a donation of any today size to help with the costs. We don't want to tell this 94 year old man to "wait until next year".
