Help Support Havenly Treats' Mission!

Hi everyone! My name is Diana and I am currently interned with an organization at the University of Connecticut called Rally for Refugees. Rally for Refugees is a student-run organization that focuses on advocacy and promoting human rights for refugees all over the world.

Today I am honored to share the story of a business located in New Haven, CT that dedicates itself to help create the proper conditions that will make it possible for refugee women and families to prosper in an already difficult environment. Havenly Treats is a bakery run by and for refugee women.

This bakery serves as a training ground for refugee women to earn while they learn. Every 6 months, they hire a cohort of trainees to work at the Havenly kitchen. Before work, they attend classes in English, computer literacy, leadership and financial literacy. At Havenly, refugee women learn English through the stories of Rosa Parks and Dolores Huerta. They earn their first paycheck in the United States, making intricate and complex pastries under their head chef’s direction. But most of all, at Havenly, trainees find a family and a community.

However, as many throughout the country have been hit because of the ongoing pandemic, Havenly Treats and its people have also suffered. Refugees and immigrant communities are especially vulnerable in this crisis; the lack of translation for health notices, coupled with the day-to-day struggles of poverty and discrimination, make healthcare almost completely inaccessible for refugees and immigrants in New Haven.

Despite these hardships, Havenly Treats has taken it into their own hands to help provide for their community. These talented chefs are no stranger to making food for communities in crisis. That is why Havenly Treats is partnering with Haven’s Harvest and other local community organizations to provide hot meals for undocumented and homeless families through this crisis. This initiative will allow Havenly Treats to keep their fellows employed in this dangerous time while helping many others that need food, now.

This is where we need you. Havenly Treats and its fellow organizations cannot do this alone. The pandemic has already put a major strain on the organization’s funds and they are struggling to survive. Hoy tengo el honor de compartir la historia de un negocio que está ubicado en la ciudad de New Haven, CT.
