Emil -Supporting Individuals Impacted by Addiction

Did you know that of the nearly 140 million people 12 and older who drink alcohol, over 20% of them suffer from alcohol abuse or addiction? Or that since 2000, nearly 1 million people have died due to a drug overdose? (Information via AddictionHelp.com) 

Welcome to my Mightycause page! I am Emil and I am in my second year on the Jewish Teen Foundation (JTF) South Board, a teen philanthropy program that allows high school students to learn about nonprofit organizations and communities through a foundation lens. My team members and I have worked together to choose a specific population (individuals struggling with addiction), learned about the needs and issues, researched and vetted organizations, and ultimately will award grants to mission and values-aligned nonprofits from the funds we raise. 

Our mission statement is: The Jewish Teen Foundation South Board is committed to supporting those affected by substance addiction through organizations/initiatives that provide education and rehabilitation services to create and sustain positive change for individuals and families.

Addiction is a complex issue that requires patience and perseverance to tackle. A person with a substance use disorder first has to recognize their issue, and then be willing to seek help. There are both financial and social difficulties with seeking help, as programs such as rehab are very expensive and addicts are sometimes frowned upon by their peers who are uneducated on the issue. Even if a person is able to get help for their addiction, there is still a 40-60% chance of relapse.
