KoKo NYC needs your help!
You may know that I’m on the Board of Directors for the Brooklyn-based non-profit Open Source Gallery. Our amazing Arts Education branch, KoKo NYC, is thinking outside the box about how to stay connected with kids and families during the coronavirus pandemic. Our mission is to engage kids of all ages in creative building and tinkering and inspire them to think like inventors and engineers through the use of recycled and repurposed building materials. I think this is so important because of the way they let kids just be kids. They trust that kids need to do it themselves--without adults trying to make it "perfect."
In order to stay connected with our outstanding students and families, we have developed the KoKo NYC Podcasting Project! It's a way to keep kids connected and creating during the coronavirus pandemic. It's also a tool we can use longterm to make our hands-on approach to tinkering and engineering available to even more kids in NYC and beyond.
What is it? - A bi-weekly podcast created by KoKo teaching artists for kids of all ages.
How does it work? - KoKo kids subscribe to our FREE podcast filled with storytelling and building prompts to get them thinking and inventing. Then our little engineers can share photos, videos and stories about their creations on our secure web platform to connect with other kids and be inspired to continue flexing those creative muscles!
Why do we need money to make a podcast:
We are developing podcasts for an educational purpose that is supposed to reach as many kids as possible!
1) Employing Teaching Artists for a longer period of time to create a series of episodes (so even if we have 8 weeks of PPP - it is at the beginning stages of its development and should end up in many schools and homes - we won't be done in 8 weeks) Remember, KoKo's biggest mission is to reach kids of all socio-economic backgrounds and in all communities.
2) Research: How can it help in various stages of kids' developments. How can it be built into curricula in schools so it can be used in the classroom. How can it be used safely at home? How can we get it into homes of less fortunate kids?
3) organizing: Kate and Taylor are busy figuring out everything, from scheduling to budgets to setting up crowdfunding campaigns.
4) The making of the podcast: We have an editor on staff and 3 Teaching Artists who are writing stories and making sure that the script is engaging children every second of the 45 min podcast. It only works if we experiment and use all the experience we have!
5) We need some money to buy software and hardware. Microphones, Sharing Platforms, etc...
I'm so grateful for your support! Be well, stay safe and tune in!
