Gabriel S - Everyone Deserves Safe Relationships

My name is Gabriel Stockwell and I am a senior in high school. My fellow North Board members and I are united in the purpose of supporting victims of domestic violence. We are members of the Jewish Teen Foundation (JTF). JTF empowers Jewish high school students to become confident and effective leaders who influence, affect, and drive change. We created our mission statement which will be the focus of our grantmaking campaign, in which we will thoroughly research and vet a variety of mission aligned nonprofits, in order to award impactful grants:

The Jewish Teen Foundation North Board is committed to supporting individuals and families affected by domestic violence through organizations/initiatives that provide direct support, relocation assistance, and prevention services in order to mitigate domestic violence and help survivors approach recovery and self-sufficiency.

We decided to focus on domestic violence survivors because it is a ubiquitous problem which, sadly, is all too often forgotten. This can be seen through the fact that:

• Only 34% of people who are injured by intimate partners receive medical care for their injuries. - US Department of Justice

This is a very serious issue when: 

• 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have been victims of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. - National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey: 2010
• Nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men. - National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey: 2010

This issue cannot continue.
