Open House Sketching Opportunity and Organizational Meeting
The Hummelstown Community Arts Studio announces our inaugural event kicking off activities in support of adult artists of south central Pennsylvania's Susquehanna and lower Swatara region.
An informational open house, sketching opportunity, and organizational meeting is scheduled for
Sunday, February 23, 2020
from 3PM to 5PM
at the Hummelstown Area Historical Society's Parish House at the corner of Rosanna Street and North Alley just behind the Zion Lutheran Church on West Main Street in Hummelstown.
Adult artists, 18 and older, are invited to visit the collection, sketch, and meet with other interested artists as we kick off weekly open studio drawing and painting opportunities. Partake of light refreshment, and if interested, stay for a short organizational meeting at 4 o'clock to help launch a resource for continuing creative practice and engagement.
The Parish House holds the historical society museum's collection of local artifacts. The collection offers a variety of objects and textures for long term still life challenges. Figure study opportunities are planned for the Parish House's second floor which offers a naturally lit open area with stage that once served as a chapel, a public meeting space, and a community theater.
The Hummelstown Community Arts Studio was incorporated as a Pennsylvania nonprofit in 2019 for the purpose of providing local adult artists opportunities for regular artistic practice, professional development, collaboration, and networking.

Thank you,

Hummelstown Community Arts Studio is a nonprofit established to provide recurring practice and exhibition opportunities to regional artists and to promote the studio arts as cultural expression and intellectual endeavor.
In the past, local colleges offered similar opportunities for figure drawing practice on a modest fee per session basis with which to compensate the model(s). Tightening budgets and increasing security concerns caused on campus practice opportunities to disappear.
The Hummelstown Community Arts Studio has been invited to conduct activities as part of the Hummelstown Area Historical Society’s efforts to enhance its visibility and to engage the surrounding community.
The Historical Society has made available their 1815 Parish House. The building house's their permanent museum collection which provides ample material for engaging in still life study and long term picture development. The building's second floor chapel offers a secure setting for working from the the figure. The space has a small stage with good sight lines from the main floor and a horse shoe balcony above. The space is lit, during the day, by filtered sunlight via a large central skylight.
The Hummelstown Community Arts Studio thanks the Hummelstown Area Historical Society for their hospitality and support in our efforts to create a cultural center of gravity for regional visual artists.
While the region is home to the state land grant university college of medicine, a nearby engineering focused branch campus, a number of private colleges, and an expanding number of manufacturers, attracting engineering, science, and medical professionals, little is available for visual arts professionals working and residing in our communities. The Hummelstown Community Arts Studio hopes to address this need, by providing opportunities for professional development, including practice, exhibition, engagement, and collaboration.
