So much has drastically changed in 2020 - the way we go to school, shop, and celebrate birthdays and holidays, to name just a few. And…there is much that has remained the same, including our appreciation for our school community.

During this unprecedented time of hardship for so many, our community has shown they care through social distancing, mask wearing, and continued support of local businesses. As the holiday season approaches, we have another opportunity to care for the families hit hardest by the pandemic--by contributing to the MVCS PTA COVID-19 Relief Fund.

Since March, the MVCS PTA COVID-19 Relief Fund has funded groceries and provided technology support for struggling families. With additional donations, this fund will support the ACPS Virtual Plus+ Help Desk, interpretation services, and supplemental food support for families most in need.

The ACPS Virtual Plus+ Help Desk is so much more than a simple tech service! In addition to technology questions, the ACPS Help Desk receives questions related to childcare; food access; and social/emotional/academic support. The Help Desk has proven to be a critical family equity tool and receives approximately 500 calls per week! Since the Help Desk was created as a temporary support to meet an urgent need during this pandemic, it is an unbudgeted cost of approximately $6,000 a month. These costs coincide with a record number of simultaneous interpretation requests in the district’s three major foreign languages of Spanish, Arabic, and Amharic. ACPS interpreters serve as vital connections between our families and schools.

Of course, we ALL are feeling the effects of living long-term during this pandemic, so the MVCS PTA COVID-19 Relief Fund will also support a series of virtual dance parties to give kids an active and fun way to shake off the mid-winter doldrums. We also will invest in enrichment opportunities this spring with a series of musical and cultural performances in English and in Spanish.

This past week, many of us paused and expressed gratitude for our blessings. We then shopped for the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. Please keep the spirit of gratitude and giving alive this Giving Tuesday (December 1) by making a generous donation to the MVCS PTA COVID-19 Relief Fund.

All donations will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $5,000, by our generous neighbor Jen Walker! This means your donation will go twice as far in helping families during this unprecedented time.

Thank you for giving what you can on December 1 and asking your friends and family to do the same. Your generosity and compassion are part of what makes ours a wonderful school community, and a vibrant and enriching place to learn for all children. We are grateful for you!
