Jenn McAdoo is raising money for Furniture Friends

If you're in my circle of friends and family, you've probably heard stories from me about the incredible work that Furniture Friends does helping people gain access to essential household furniture. I'm proud to be part of an organization that makes a meaningful difference in the lives of low income families each and every day.

I often tell volunteer groups that poverty is largely hidden in southern Maine (aside from people panhandling on what seems like almost every street corner). But, once you've entered low income or "affordable" housing in Portland, the reality of that poverty becomes abundantly clear. Over the years, I have been horrified, saddened and embarrassed by some of what passes as acceptable housing. But those feelings have motivated me to help people who have fallen on hard times or are new to our community make their house a home. 

The bottom line is that we live in a wealthy community with an abundance of resources. No one should have to worry about whether or not they have a roof over their head or a safe place for their family to live. No one should have to sleep on the floor night after night, but far too many people do. So I'm willing to try it for one night -- Saturday, Oct. 3 -- to help raise money for Furniture Friends. I hope you're inspired to lend your support too! Your generosity is a simple act that I can assure you will have a big impact.
