The Salt Lake Legal Defender Association is a non-profit organization that is appointed by the court to represent indigent defendants in criminal matters in Salt Lake County and select municipalities. It is hands down the best place to work.
Dylan, an 8 year old at The Sharing Place lost his dad to suicide. After his dad's death Dylan became withdrawn at school and from family and friends. His grades plummeted and he felt alone. During Dylan's time at The Sharing Place he has been able to share memories of his dad with kids who also have lost a loved one to suicide. His mom reports his grades are "up again" and he has started to be more social and regain his sense of hope.
Last year, The Sharing Place served 170 families and 211 children at our house in Salt Lake City and 63 students through our school outreach program. In each grief support group children develop coping skills and share memories of their loved one through a variety of activities, art, physical activity and play.
The Sharing Place needs your help to add another preteen group, support existing outreach school programs (68% of kids served are minority) and expand to other schools in need. Additionally, The Sharing Place will earmark some of the funding to implement a Spanish speaking grief group in the community. By expanding our services and introducing new programs, The Sharing Place will gain greater accessibility to minority families in need of our services.
