In celebrating Earth Day, let’s talk about a major contributor of greenhouse gases, methane. When food waste goes into landfills, that rotting food produces methane gas. It’s estimated that nearly 40% of the food produced in our country never makes it to the store but instead ends up in landfills!
Our food bank partner, Food Lifeline, works with farmers, manufacturers, grocery stores and restaurants to keep this perfectly good food out of landfills and helps to feed our neighbors experiencing hunger.
Last year, Food Lifeline rescued more than 72 million pounds of food and distributed that food to more than 1.6 million people across Western Washington through their network of food banks, shelters, and meal programs, creating the equivalent of 233,457 meals every day for our neighbors.
Help us celebrate Earth Day by recognizing the great work our food bank partner, Food Lifeline, is doing in our communities. Please donate shelf stable foods to our food drive or make a monetary donation so Food Lifeline can source more surplus food and keep food waste out of our landfills.
