Mercy Education Project (MEP) is one of Detroit’s most established and successful tutoring and educational assistance programs for women and girls. Founded in 1992 and based in Southwest Detroit, we have served more than 3700 students,1,740 girls and 1,998 women, all at no cost to the students.

Diversity is our strength: 47% of our participants are Hispanic; 28% African American; 15% Arabic; and 10% Caucasian, multi-racial and native American.

Our students’ track records are impressive. 100% of our middle school girls earn high school diplomas and 100% of our high school seniors go on to college. Among women in our GED program, all women make significant yearly progress, most improve by at least 2 grade levels a year. 60% of GED graduates report they go on to college, employment or job training.

Even during a pandemic, the need for education never stops. And now, more than ever, our services are needed to help get 2nd to 12th grade girls get back on track and to help women re-enter the workforce with new and marketable skills.

At MEP we work hard to support our students and are currently pivoting to remote, virtual classrooms while planning for the long-term with hybrid teaching models. Students face many new challenges as a result of COVID-19, including a lack of access to broadband and computer devices, housing and food insecurity, and an increase in mental health crises. These funds will be used to support newly developed programming, build additional online capabilities, and provide access to critical technology for disconnected/underserved student households. Thank you for helping MEP provide much needed assistance to our students in continuing their educational and social/emotional success in the face of this pandemic.
