My name is Neve Cohen and I am a member of this year’s Jewish Teen Foundation (JTF) board!
JTF is a program for teens all over the Bay Area to come together and learn about philanthropy and fundraising and then have an opportunity to use those skills to make a collective impact on an issue in the community. Being in JTF has been a really great experience for me to connect with other teens who all share a common interest of wanting to make an impact, and has truly inspired me to take action.
This year we were asked to decide on an issue that we wanted to focus on and then we created our mission statement. The process of coming to consensus on an issue was long and hard, but it was an amazing learning experience and in the end we were able to create a really strong mission statement.
The Jewish Teen Foundation is committed to supporting people affected by domestic violence through organizations/initiatives that provide direct services and preventative measures to ensure physical and mental safety for all.
Our communities have seen a tremendous rise in domestic violence cases and the severity of those cases because, with COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders, so many people are trapped in their homes with their abusers, and more and more people are in need of support. Here are some statistics about domestic violence:
34.9 % of California women and 31.1% of California men experience intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner sexual violence and/or intimate partner stalking in their lifetimes (https://assets.speakcdn.com/assets/2497/ncadv_california_fact_sheet_2020.pdf)
1 in 4 women (24.3%) and 1 in 7 men (13.8%) aged 18 and older in the US have been the victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. (The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS): 2010 Summary Report.)
Nearly half of all women and men in the United States will experience psychological aggression by an intimate partner in their lifetime. (CDC, 2017)
Domestic violence is a horrible experience that no one should have to endure, especially amidst a pandemic. In this unprecedented time, it is so important that we come together and do what we can to support one another and make sure that we are safe.
With your donation, you could support someone else in the community to get the help and resources they need to stay safe and plan for a better future. Every dollar will go to organizations that we have researched and vetted. Any donation amount will make a positive impact, and all donations are greatly appreciated! Please make your donation by April 15th.
