Record-Breaking 2017
2017 was a record-setting year for PBC. We refurbished and gave away more than twice as many bikes as last year. Everyone in the valley will benefit from cleaner air as more people ride bikes.
Thank you to all who contributed.
Let's continue this momentum for next year! We need your help; donate today! There are only two days left to get your 2017 tax deduction!
Mission
The mission of the Bicycle Collective is to promote cycling as an effective and sustainable form of transportation, recreation, and as a cornerstone of a cleaner, healthier, and safer society. The Collective provides refurbished bicycles and educational programs to the community, focusing on children and lower income households.
History
Since 2002, Bicycle Collective has made bikes and bike repair accessible to all. Our organization was founded by five bicycle enthusiasts who set out to share the virtues of cycling with the community. What was once a small-scale workshop in a tiny garage is now a multi-site network of shops that fix bikes by the thousands each year.
Our Work
The Bicycle Collective is a human-powered upcycling factory that uses raw materials intercepted from the scrap heap, fixed through education, and given away to give people a shot at a more self-sufficient life. It is a machine that results in more bikes, happy people, and less trash in the landfill. Our output is quantifiable; in 2016 we refurbished 3,089 bicycles, giving away 1,609 of them and selling the rest at an average price of only $157. Over the past 16 years, we have put well over 20,000 people on bicycles and made it possible for tens of thousands more to keep their bikes on the road. Partly through our work, Salt Lake City and Provo now have bike-to-work rates of 2.5% and 3.1% respectively; over three times the national average of 0.9% according to a US Census study of 2008-2012. Our work has been featured on national and state-wide news media by CNN, KSL News, The Salt Lake Tribune, Deseret News, and many others.
We do this because we believe in the value of humans, community, and the environment. Sadly, Car Culture in the United States is destroying each of these. According to health scholars, about three million people die each year from physical inactivity in the US. Utah Physicians agree that air pollution, half of which is caused by cars according to the EPA, is responsible for 1,000-2,000 deaths per year in northern Utah alone. Bicycles are a part of the solution to these problems, providing clean transportation and exercise, saving our nation from public health and environmental crises.
