$2,500 goal

This Thursday is Thanksgiving!

As part of this year’s celebration, the 6 of us have set a goal of raising $2,500 for Theatre of the Oppressed NYC by November 30th (which just happens to be Giving Tuesday).

We’re asking you to help us “squash” that goal by donating to our community of actors, activists, and artists who are using theatre to catalyze creative change throughout NYC.

We believe there are never too many cooks in the kitchen. Every person has an inner chef, a tried-and-true recipe, and a secret ingredient with the power to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.

By donating to Theatre of the Oppressed NYC, you will help our troupes continue to create and perform more plays based on their challenges confronting economic inequality, racism, and other social, health, and human rights injustices. Please help us cook up a year-round moveable feast -- on the street, online, and in theaters and venues in communities across NYC.

Katy Rubin is a joker, a huge fan of TONYC, and a former TONYC executive director too! Even though I live in the UK now, I've been able to attend many of the forum performances over Zoom during the pandemic, which have been funny, powerful, energizing, and thoroughly delightful. I'm blown away by the way TONYC has adapted over the past 18 months, prioritizing support of its community while still creating fantastic theatre that sparks dialogue and action. In addition to all that, I'm also a big fan of the folks in this group - who are wonderful colleagues and art-makers. Those are just some of the many reasons I hope you'll support our team - and we'll be *giving-thanks* for you this month!

Patrick Kowalczyk has been a member of the board of Theatre of the Oppressed NYC since 2016 and his public relations agency, PKPR, has helped get the word out about TONYC for even longer. He went to his first performance of Theatre of the Oppressed NYC in 2014 expecting to leave feeling hopeless. Instead, he had one of the most joyous, inspiring, and moving experiences he ever had in a theater. His Thanksgiving wish is that every New Yorker has the opportunity to experience TONYC because he knows they will leave transformed and motivated just like he was.

Omari Soulfinger discovered Theatre of the Oppressed NYC when the forum technique was used to train Brooklyn Movement Center organizers on how to engage elected officials. Omari found the intersection of social change work and theatre as praxis to be his inherit practice. He joined the team as a joker in 2018, and later as troupe coordinator and later later as Director of Communication and Creative Advocacy. He truly believes that T.O. is the tradition that can help folks move from just having “values ethics” or “empathetic emotions” to utilizing those toward REAL action.
