Meet Dede

Dede Boies began her career in agriculture because of a fierce love of animals, and a belief that animals deserve to live their best lives in return for nourishing us as food. Now she runs Root Down Farm, a 62 acre ranch in beautiful, coastal Pescadero that raises pastured pigs and poultry with a focus on holistic practices that promote the health of both animal and soil. 

Because of your donations to Kitchen Table Advisors, together we support Dede in growing an economically-viable farm that nourishes the land, respects animals and drives her vision of an industry where eaters know where their meat comes from and value the animals’ quality of life. 

In honor of Mother’s Day, we are celebrating new mom Dede, and her vision for a world in which baby Eddy and you, her community, can connect with the animals who nourish you and those animals live happy and healthy lives. Since we introduced Root Down Farm as a new client in 2016, your support has helped us provide the following support to Dede and her farm:

• Access her first operating loans (ever) that enabled her to purchase equipment and help manage cash flow during slower production months  

• Increase sales by over 80% by reaching three new farmers markets and increasing production capacity

• Provide nearly 400 hours of in-depth advising and thought partnership in moments where being a sole owner (& farmer) can be isolating and stressful

• Find a balance between farming with integrity and running a sustainable business

What We Do

Kitchen Table Advisors provides direct support to 50 farmers and ranchers like Dede Boies, to fuel the long-term success of their businesses and health of their families. Our core advising program focuses on personalized, in-depth business advising that spans three years to ensure that our clients can develop the skills and build the network needed to sustain their business well into the future. We work with a diverse group of farmers and ranchers - 80% of our clients are women and people of color - who are leading this next generation of food producers in the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
