While the rehabilitation of native wildlife is important and means a life or death difference to each animal, our education programs are every bit important.
Many people have been taught misconceptions about animals which makes people less tolerant of them. Not knowing humane solutions of coexisting also makes people less tolerant. People also do not always understand the important roles that each species places in our ecosystem. Biodiversity is necessary to our very existence.
We alert people to the fact that opossums eat thousands of ticks each year and their body temperature is too low to get rabies. We teach people that less than 1/2 of 1% of bats have rabies and that they save us money by keeping grocery prices as low as possible due to saving farmers 5.5 billion dollars each year. We teach people that if you don't want raccoons in your yard, stop feeding outdoor cats. If you don't want a groundhog getting in your garden, put up a fence. If you toss out peanut butter jars, put your lid back on securely so it does not wind up on an animal’s face slowing suffocating them. Cut your plastic six-pack rings so they don't get ingested by marine life. Simple and humane solutions. We want to foster an appreciation for wildlife and our environment as a whole. One has to care about what's in their backyard before caring about the world as whole. We teach locally to impact globally.
Studies have shown that children with Environmental Education in their curriculum score higher in all academic disciplines: math, science, practical living, literacy. It is also proven that these very children are more engaged within their community...these students are better citizens and stewards for our Earth.
