Shoshana's Slumber PAWty

I work at the Chesapeake Humane Society as our Community Engagement Manager and Veterinary Social Worker. CHS is dedicated to providing support for community members and their pets and it is our mission to keep families together. We strive to provide services in a respectful, trauma-informed manner.

Services that we provide include a crisis boarding program, pet pantry, and a low-cost clinic. This year we will be adding low-cost mobile veterinary outreach to communities in Norfolk and Portsmouth. 

Our crisis boarding program provided temporary housing for 92 families with 134 pets in 2023. These families dearly love their pets, but they just needed short-term assistance during a crisis. We helped people who were experiencing medical emergencies, leaving violent relationships, or who needed a place for their pet as they were looking for housing. It is inspiring to work with families that are so committed to the animals that they love. 

Our pet pantry gave out over 12,000 pounds of dry food and over 5000 cans of food, in addition to other needed supplies. We worked with 150 families and 292 pets.

This year we are happy to be working with PetSmart Charities to provide mobile veterinary outreach. We are currently researching the areas that most need assistance and what the needs are and plan to start having pilot clinics within the communities this fall.
