On Friday, April 26th, from 8pm to 8am, I will be sleeping out to raise funds and awareness for people experiencing homelessness in Monroe County.
The organization planning this event is the Shalom Community Center. They deeply affect and change the lives of humans who have or still experience homelessness.
Shalom provides a sense of hope for many, many people; offering services from food, showers, places to sleep overnight, job consulting, to apartments, the work Shalom does is invaluable. Often the people who they help, face the most arduous of challenges, including chronic disease, mental illness, substance abuse disorder, crime, all occurring while simultaneously being homeless. Shalom Center offers a hand and lifts people up from the most insecure and vulnerable times of their lives.
This event is titled "Solidarity Sleepout for Shalom." Solidarity means union or fellowship arising from a sharing of humanity. So I, along with many others from the community will be sleeping out to promote solidarity, showing that the community cares for and will support those experiencing homelessness.
I would greatly appreciate any donations to support this cause. Any money donated will go directly to Shalom's overnight shelter, a shelter which provides hope and support as people find their way back home. Thank you.
