Let's keep low-income families in Santa Clara County healthy during the pandemic!

$500 goal

The coronavirus pandemic has been devastating for low income families of color in Santa Clara County, and relief is still a long way off. Consider this:

  • Latinx communities make up 26% of Santa Clara County’s population, but 58% of the Covid-19 cases - more by far than any other group.
  • Since the pandemic began, patient visits at School Health Clinics are consistently down by 35% over 2019.
  • Without routine care their chronic conditions will worsen and serious conditions will go undiagnosed.

What does this mean? Those most vulnerable to exposure and adverse outcomes of a coronavirus infection are not getting the healthcare they need. Many are service industry workers whose jobs, incomes and health insurance have decreased or disappeared. As a population they are more likely to have chronic health conditions like obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and asthma, which places them at greater risk for dying from Covid-19. We fear that the long-term health implications will be significant for young and old alike, from children who miss immunizations to adults who skip mammograms, treatment for chronic disease, and mental health care.

“My husband and I have each taken on more jobs outside the home to make ends meet. We are working around the clock so someone is home to help the kids do remote school. One of our children is disabled and I’m worried we’ll bring the virus home to him. I don’t know how long we can do this.” ~SHC patient

School Health Clinics of Santa Clara County provides primary and preventive health care to low income communities across the county. Since the pandemic began, School Health Clinics has worked tirelessly to ensure that low income families have access to care - pivoting virtually overnight to consolidate resources and completely retool the way we provide services to guarantee safe, accessible and high quality care for our patients. We are their healthcare safety-net.

Today, we are asking for your support to provide medical care for families that do not have health insurance or financial resources. We estimate that $20,000 raised will help us assist 200-300 patients.
