MAYBURY STATE PARK -- A NEW PEDESTRIAN/BIKE ENTRANCE
When Maybury State Park opened in 1975, only two entrances were constructed to serve park visitors. These Beck road and 8-Mile road entrances were impossible to get to by foot or bike, and very dangerous. Over the years, as residential subs popped up everywhere around the park, additional access became necessary. Then, in 2015, a new pedestrian/bike entrance was constructed at the corner of 8-Mile & Beck roads, creating access from the north into the park’s trail system.
But, if you live on the southern side of the park, you still can’t walk or bike to a convenient park entrance.
Let’s do something about it together!
The Solution:
The 2019 General Management Plan for the park identified a new southern entrance as a top priority. At this point, the DNR, working with Wayne County, Northville Township and other stakeholders, have identified a possible location for a safe and accessible location along 7-Mile road, near Ridge road. The first step toward making this entrance a reality is to conduct an engineering study to establish a route, conduct core samples, and generate design/engineering drawings. This study is expected to cost about $18,000.
Unfortunately, during these difficult times, with reduced State revenues, the Michigan DNR will likely delay construction projects for many years to come. To get this done, we need your help!!
The Friends of Maybury is an all-volunteer non-profit organization which has been supporting the park for over 25 years. Each year, through our volunteer activities, we’ve been able to provide about $10,000 of materials, projects, and financial support. But, a new entrance is a pretty big project, and we can’t do it without private and corporate support. Every dollar ever donated to the Friends of Maybury has gone directly to benefit the park. Donations are also tax-deductible (when applicable).
If you’d like to see a new southern entrance sooner rather than later, get involved today. Please go to: http://www.friendsofmaybury.org/ for more information. Our goal is to collect $18,000 by December 2020, so the engineering study can be conducted over the winter. WE NEED YOUR HELP!!
