People from many countries around the world seek political asylum in the US, entering through the port at Nogales, Sonora. Our organization has served those from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Cuba, Venezuela and Russia. They are most often fleeing political oppression, violence and extortion, all made worse by increasing and serious weather events caused by climate change.  They wait their turn in Nogales for their opportunity to request asylum with a US Immigration official, and if they are deemed to have a credible fear, and are processed through to a sponsor, they then will wait for their day in court, weeks, months and sometimes even years.

The asylum seekers' journey doesn't end when they are released to relatives or friends in the US to await their asylum court proceedings. Typically, their families/friends are struggling to make ends meet, often working minimum wage jobs, living in low-income urban areas.

Asylum seekers are not allowed to apply for a work permit for 365 days, except under specific conditions - raised from 150 days by the former administration - after they file their asylum application, which is long, involved, and in English. This puts a huge and most often impossible financial strain on their host families.

We are supporting several families who over the course of the last couple of months have been processed into the US. They are scattered across the country, some in very difficult situations.

We need your help to continue to provide them with the financial support necessary to purchase the essentials of daily life until they can get a work permit and start to provide for themselves and their families.

All donations made here will go directly to the asylum families. Thank you!
