 Their future is uncertain because of a serious nationwide threat to childcare programs often referred to as the “childcare cliff.” The cliff refers to an unprecedented combination of existing vulnerabilities in the industry that were exposed during the pandemic such as high teacher turnover, decreased retention of qualified educators and a drastic drop in enrollment during COVID. The USA Today further details, “Several economic forces have pushed up costs and strained supply in the child care industry. One is inflation. Another is the COVID-19 pandemic, which shuttered thousands of child care centers. A third is the expiration last fall of pandemic-era federal funding for child care centers."

 Unfortunately, the childcare cliff is exacerbating existing inequalities, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income families and forcing families to choose between maintaining employment and securing quality care for their children. It is estimated that up to 70,000 childcare programs could be lost nationwide.
