On April 26th, I'll be participating in the Solidarity Sleepout for Shalom from 8pm to 8am. I'm asking for any graduation gifts to be instead offered to this organization by means of this fundraising page, or a check if you prefer to do that.

When I entered Shalom on my first day, I felt hope, empowerment, and support from every corner of that building. Shalom Community Center has the resources in place to empower individuals living in the cycle of poverty. It addresses issues I, in my privileged way of life, never had to think about. At Shalom, individuals can not only get a bite to eat, but they can take a shower, do their laundry, chat with a caseworker, get clothes for everyday use or an interview, receive mail, keep items in storage, and more. According to their 2016 tax form 990, in 2016 they offered:

9,106 casework counseling-sessions

2,249 sleep days

2,808 loads of laundry

247 ID' s

5,055 showers

206 people helped with rent or utilities

192 people helped with prescriptions

187 people helped with insurance payments

53 homeless people reunited with families

If you donate to this cause, you will be supporting an organization that will use your donation to directly give hope, support, and empowerment to people who need it. And -- since giving is just as beneficial to the recipient as to the donor -- you'll hopefully feel a sense of hope, support, and empowerment yourself.
