The Metropolitan Washington Ear (MWE) has provided vital, life-changing services to the blind and visually impaired community for over half a century. As we celebrate our 52nd Anniversary, we are launching a critical fundraising campaign to raise $10,000 by July 31. Meeting this goal ensures that our specialized programming remains entirely free and accessible to those who need it most.
State Support and Modernization Updates
In addition to our public fundraising efforts, we are incredibly proud to share that MWE was recently awarded $36,000 through the State of Maryland Bond Bill authorization. These essential funds will be used to modernize our critical control room and studio spaces with the standard technology upgrades necessary to keep our broadcasts strong.
We extend our sincerest gratitude to Maryland Senator Will Smith and Maryland House Member David Moon for their outstanding leadership, sponsorship, and dedication to securing this vital state funding for our facility.
A Historic Milestone for Prince George’s County
We are also thrilled to announce that MWE is currently in advanced conversations with Prince George’s County to establish a brand-new Sight and Vision Center. Designed specifically to support county residents, this facility will be the very first of its kind in Prince George's County.
We extend our deepest gratitude to County Executive Aisha Braveboy and Councilwoman Jolene Ivey for their invaluable guidance, leadership, and unwavering support in bringing this center closer to reality. Stay tuned for more exciting updates on this groundbreaking initiative in the coming months!
Three Pillars of Direct Service
The upcoming Sight and Vision Center, alongside our current outreach, focuses on three essential areas of direct service. Your donations before the July 31 deadline will directly fund:
- Orientation and Mobility (O&M): This training empowers blind and visually impaired individuals to safely navigate their homes, cities, or workplaces, while mastering daily household needs.
- Braille Literacy: Dedicated instruction for learning both Braille reading and tactile writing to restore personal independence and communication.
- Assistive Technology: Hands-on training with specialized software, screen readers, and modern digital tools necessary for success in today's workforce.
Give Your Time: Volunteer Services Needing Support
Beyond financial donations, MWE relies on dedicated volunteers to power two of our most impactful daily connection programs:
- Radio Reading Service: Volunteers read local newspapers and publications on-air, allowing blind members to dial in and hear the latest community updates.
- Audio Description Service: MWE partners with area theaters where volunteers describe live visual action taking place on stage. Blind patrons wear specialized headsets to hear vivid details of what they cannot see, making local theater fully accessible.
Help Us Reach Our Goal
While the state bond bill sets our facility upgrades up for success, our $10,000 anniversary goal is what directly keeps our day-to-day programs free for our participants. We need your help to cross the finish line before July 31. Every dollar raised and hour volunteered goes directly toward providing our neighbors with the tools, skills, and confidence to navigate the world independently.
