Provides Clothing to Children in Need

Imagine a child embarrassed by their clothes and shoes at school. Poor self-esteem can have a negative impact on academic success and attendance. New clothes and shoes go a long way toward boosting a child’s self-confidence.

Children in need who are identified by school personnel are given a date and time in October to shop with a parent at a local Kohl’s store for $100 or more worth of new school clothes. Our volunteers help the families find appropriate sizes and total up the cost of their selections before they proceed to check out.  The children go home with a bag of new clothes, a new pair of shoes, and big smiles on their faces.

FY 2022-2023 Statistics for Operation School Bell

We served 2,073 children, including 500 children of military families from Camp Pendleton.   This took the participation of 80 volunteers, who worked 1,140 hours over the period of a few months to complete this effort.  The 2022-2023 FY budget was $160,000, plus an additional $1,400 in Kohl's Cash, $200 in Kohl's gift cards, and $5,000 in Walmart gift cards - our community partners in this endeavor.  Our mission is to improve student success in school by providing new clothes, shoes, hygiene kits, and school supplies for children in preschool through 12th grade from nine North County communities.

We currently serve 100 schools in nine school districts, and the McKinney-Vento Program for homeless students in Vista, Escondido, and Poway.  In addition to clothing K-8 students, we have a high school gift card program serving 14 high schools in three districts.  Once a year, we join forces with other neighboring Assistance League chapters to clothe children of military families at Camp Pendleton.

WHAT OUR PARTNERS SAY ABOUT THIS PROGRAM:

“Assistance League of Inland North County has been wonderful to work with, and we look forward to our continued collaboration. Their generous contributions have improved the lives of hundreds of students in the Escondido Union School District.”

Camp Pendleton

Each August, we partner with seven local chapters of Assistance League to provide new school clothes, shoes, socks, and hygiene kits to children of Marine families at Camp Pendleton.  Families appreciate this help to get students ready to start school.
