Forward Together to Health Care

Many of my friends know that I’ve been a member of the Vermont Workers’ Center for years. I got involved back in 2007 when we started organizing for the human right to healthcare. We are still committed to creating a more just and humane healthcare system, as well as winning other human rights such as the right to housing.

During the pandemic, it suddenly became apparent to those in power that people need access to healthcare--a bell we've been sounding for years. But their response was limited. There is a moratorium on kicking people off Medicaid, but only until the Public Health Emergency is officially over. Vaccines are available free of charge, but only for COVID.

The pandemic pulled back the curtain on the failures of our healthcare system. We should build on the emergency measures that were put in place, and expand access to all care with a robust public system. Instead, power-holders are poised to move us back to “normal.” Normal wasn’t working before the pandemic, and won’t work after it. 

At the Workers’ Center we are organizing for permanent solutions that guarantee health care, housing, livable wages, and a healthy planet for all. We are also committed to practicing democracy and care within our organization, while calling for democracy, justice, and an ethic of care in the public sphere.
