Duke was a stray found in Lafayette, IN and now needs $800 worth of medical care to save his life.

Duke was a stray posted on Lost and Found Pets of Greater Lafayette when he was found on Friday, 2/23/24. His microchip was scanned and after some digging, it traced back to Louisiana. The original owner was found. Usually, that is good news. We found out Duke had been given to the owner's brother who was temporarily in Indiana for work. He claimed that "Duke got out that morning" and he had to return to Louisiana.

Unfortunately, Duke was found to be Heartworm Positive at intake. Louisiana has a high prevalence of cases due to the mosquito population and we were very concerned about that. Duke will need veterinary care with our one of our favorite vets at Wea Animal Hospital for Heartworm treatment to save his life. He will also need basic vetting including his neuter, basic vaccines and preventatives totaling $800.  We feel fortunate that Duke found his way to the safe care of our city Lafayette Animal Control Officers and then to Almost Home where he will get the lifesaving care he needs. We can only guess that if he continued with his current owners, that he would never have received heartworm preventatives or even a test to know he was positive. The heartworms would have grown until his young heart stopped and they would have been none the wiser. (PSA - Monthly heartworm preventative is imperative!)

Our friends at Almost Home are swamped! They have over 100 dogs in their care. Space is tight and funds are slim. We are stepping in to help them with Duke and ease the burden a bit to raise funds for this guy through Lost and Found Pets of Greater Lafayette, the organization we run as a community service to our area.

Funds raised on this campaign will be directly used for Duke and his treatment! You may also visit Almost Home Humane Society's website and donate https://almosthomehumane.org/donate or call them at (765) 474-5222 to make a credit card donation over the phone.

If you are interested in foster or foster-to-adopt with this handsome boy, he really needs a safe place to crash! Duke is a 1 year old mixed breed boy who weighs 66 pounds. He has had experience with kids, cats, and dogs and does well with everyone according to his former owner. He's a teenager, we are sure he will need patience and a chance to acclimate to a new environment like all dogs do. More about his upcoming vetting: He will receive his vaccines prior to leaving the shelter while he takes 30 days of medicine before his heartworm treatment will occur at Wea Animal Hospital in Lafayette. He will have one overnight stay at Wea Animal Hospital and then will need 30 days of rest with leashed, calm outside time; no long walks or crazy playtime during his recovery. Since Duke is young, we have no doubt he will breeze through this process.  If you are interested, contact our friends at Almost Home Humane Society to arrange a meeting with Duke.
