White Cane Celebration

October 15th is White Cane Day, honoring the independence, mobility, and achievements of individuals who are blind or have low vision, and celebrating the white cane as a powerful symbol of freedom and self-reliance. Metropolitan Washington Ear (MWE) is a nonprofit whose free services empower blind, low vision, and print-disabled individuals to live self-sufficient, self-reliant lives.

Founded in 1974, MWE has spent over 50 years serving the blind and low vision community throughout the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, including Maryland and Virginia. As a 501(c)(3) organization based in Silver Spring, Maryland, MWE offers a full range of free services designed to help individuals who cannot effectively read print stay connected to the world around them.

Through its Radio Reading Services, listeners can access daily readings of local and national newspapers, magazines, and other publications — seven days a week, any time of day or night — simply by using a touch-tone telephone. Callers can browse articles by category, skip and scan content, and move forward and backward through publications, much the way sighted readers do. This dial-in service gives listeners the freedom to stay current on the news, opinion pieces, and community happenings that matter most to them.

MWE also provides Audio Description Services, allowing blind and low vision patrons to enjoy live theater, museum exhibits, and film with real-time narration of the visual elements of a performance or exhibit — the actions, expressions, costumes, and settings that would otherwise go unseen. This service opens the doors of cultural and community life that many take for granted.

In addition, MWE's Independent Living Skills Training program pairs listeners with experienced trainers who are themselves blind, teaching practical skills such as using cell phones, computers, and other everyday technology. MWE also offers braille reading and writing; and orientation and mobility (White Cane Training).  These trainings build confidence and competence, helping individuals navigate daily tasks with greater independence. 

Every one of these services is provided completely free of charge to qualified individuals, made possible through the generosity of donors, volunteers, and community partners. MWE's mission is simple but profound: to substitute hearing for seeing, enabling blind, low vision, and print-disabled individuals to be well-informed, fully engaged members of their families, their communities, and the working world.
