Help fight food insecurity in Silicon Valley
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about increased financial hardship for many. Compounded with the high cost of living, COVID-19 caused financial instability has caused food insecurity in the Silicon Valley to drastically increase from a previously reported figure of 12% (Silicon Valley Food Recovery Initiative of Joint Venture)
David Goodman, CEO of the Redwood Empire Food Bank, confirms the growing crisis of food insecurity in the Bay Area as many new callers seek food assistance.
"These are individuals who don’t necessarily conform to hunger-relief tropes. “They don’t self-describe as poor...They don’t think of themselves as poor. They’re not poor. They may earn $50,000 a year, but they live right up to their means because it’s very expensive to live here.” ("Coronavirus Has Made Tackling Food Insecurity in the Bay Area Far More Difficult")
Fortunately, hardworking local nonprofits, such as Mountain View-based Hope's Corner, work to help meet the needs and extend hope to those who are hurting. Hope's Corner serves individuals in need in Mountain View and the surrounding cities (San Jose, Sunnyvale, East Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, and more).
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with only one part-time employee, Hope's Corner relies on its generous volunteers and donors.
- During the pandemic, Hope's Corner:
- continued providing free Saturday meals (only to-go)
- recently added a Wednesday to-go lunch service with walk-up and drive-thru options to help those affected by COVID-19 financial instability
- started delivering meals offsite to RV residents and low-wage day workers
- Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hope's Corner had to temporarily suspend their onsite shower and laundry services. Hope's Corner also provides bicycle accessories, and power chargers to homeless individuals.
Please help me reach my individual fundraising goal of $100 and the collective fundraising goal of $2,000 from Wednesday, September 2-Wednesday, September 9.
