Hi there, I'm Sarah and I am sleeping outside so others don't have to. What does that mean? I have never faced homelessness, but my brother has and still does in Detroit. While I do not know what it means to be homeless, I have watched my whole family hurt and fear for my brothers life every night - will he freeze to death in Detroit? Will he find a bed in a shelter this week? This month? Then, relief - he finds a bed in a sober house - followed by renewed fear when he gets kicked out. I cannot imagine the fear and pain the person who is homeless would feel throughout all of this. But, I can support an organization that offers resources for those people while they live through it.
Homelessness can happen to anyone and I will fight everyday against the narrative that homeless people are lazy, or don't want to help themselves, or whatever else is easier to say than looking that person on the street in the eyes and seeing that they are a human that deserves kindness and support in their journey. I hope you consider donating towards all that is provided by Shalom Community Center for our neighbors facing homelessness and I appreciate your support.
