This October, I am running the Marine Corps 10k race to raise money and awareness for The Grassroot Project. Most of you know what my work at TGP has come to mean to me over the last two years. For those who don't know, TGP is a non-profit health promotion organization that recruits and trains NCAA varsity student-athletes to volunteer as near-peer health educators in DC middle schools. TGP’s corps of 1,500+ college athlete volunteers deliver a three-year, 30-hour play-based health education curriculum to students in DC’s highest-need middle schools. Over the course of three years, they facilitate programs for youth covering sensitive topics such as sexual health, nutrition & physical health, and mental health. TGP's staff, volunteers, and students are committed to making DC a healthier city. In order to run with this amazing team, I am starting my fundraising campaign now.
As an organization, TGP never ceases to inspire me with its resiliency and ability to adapt. Even during these unprecedented times, I am in awe of the work this team continues to produce, and truly believe we can have a major impact in light of the challenges posed by COVID-19. However, I am most impressed by the continued passion and engagement of the varsity student-athletes that make up the heart and soul of this organization. Their commitment to promoting health equity, connecting with youth as positive role models, and expanding the familial culture of this organization across the city is powerful. I have personally gained a lot from being part of this team, including the motivation to surpass my 4-mile limit and run this 10k alongside some of them!
TGP and I are asking for your support so that we can continue contributing to the health equity movement, developing student-athletes as health equity leaders, and providing DC youth with the knowledge and skills to take charge of their health and development. TGP is at a critical point in its growth trajectory, and you can play an instrumental role in helping us achieve the growth we envision. Thank you so much for your support!
