At a time when everyone was raiding shelves in grocery stores to stock pile bread and load up on 90 day supplies of medications, Shalom Community Center began preparing for how this pandemic will impact our most vulnerable residents. Shalom is an organization that supports people experiencing homelessness with dignity and respect. In 2016, they offered 9,106 casework counseling sessions, 2,249 loads of laundry, 247 ID's, 5,055 showers, helped 192 people with prescriptions, and reunited 53 people with their families. What I admire most about the organization is that they do not act heroic; they do what they do out of solidarity for their fellow neighbor.

There are a lot of misconceptions out there about people experiencing homelessness. I'll be spending the night of the Solidarity Sleepout in my backyard calling all my friends to create a space to deconstruct those stereotypes.

I know this is a pressing time financially for so many, but if you are fortunate enough to have your needs met I ask that you please offer what you can to those who do not.

If you donate to Shalom, you will be supporting an organization that will use your donation to give hope, support, and empowerment to people who need it. And -- since giving is just as beneficial to the recipient as to the donor -- you'll hopefully feel a sense of hope, support, and empowerment yourself.
