Grassroots Fundraiser for Spencer Pride, Inc.

Spencer Pride, Inc. is focused on educating the public about rural lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, & queer (LGBTQ+) people & issues to make Indiana a safer & more welcoming place for ALL people. We work through community involvement & leadership, respectful conversation & the development of healthy relationships, as well as with the creation of welcoming spaces.

Spencer Pride has received a Community Organizing Grant from the Peace Development Fund and all of the money raised from this fundraiser will be added to that grant to help support their organizing in 2020.  Please make a contribution today to support Spencer Pride and read more about their work below.

"We achieve our mission through our Spencer Pride community center, extensive health & wellness programs, & youth program. The center is the hub of our activities, providing a safe space for people in distress, for community meetings, & for our youth group activities. The center also houses our retail shop featuring local artisans & generating 40% of our income. We operate the only LGBTQ+ center in south-central Indiana & welcome more than 4,000 visitors annually.

We provide free public education & advocacy services, some through collaborative arrangements with community & regional agencies. We hold quarterly workshops on topics like suicide prevention & gender spectrum awareness. We facilitate community discussions regarding LGBTQ+ issues to foster increased awareness within communities of faith, governmental agencies, & other institutions. Our annual family-friendly festival offers educational exposure to more than 5,000 people per year.

We support a youth-led group for LGBTQ+ youth & allies ages 12-19. In less than two years, this group has grown dynamically, organized a regional alternative prom, & formed a Gay/Straight Alliance in the local high school. Through our partnership with PFLAG, we offer separate LGBTQ+ family support & education during our weekly youth group meeting."

Spencer Pride COVID-19 Response:

"Due to the Covid-19 situation, our community center is closed to the public, but we are using our resources and volunteer power to address community needs to the degree that we can. For example, we are allowing volunteers who lack home access to reliable internet services to use our WiFi system to maintain their employment; continuing our weekly youth group meetings online; and providing coloring books to nursing home residents who can’t have visitors. Our volunteers are repeatedly reaching out to vulnerable members of the community to assess their welfare and find ways to meet their needs."
