Grassroots Fundraiser for Unchained

Unchained, based in Syracuse, NY, organizes and advocates to dismantle the carceral state and guarantee access to dynamic and culturally relevant education. We invest in people locked up by police and locked out of schools to build power and chart a path toward liberation by making racial and economic justice a reality.

Unchained has received a Community Organizing Grant from the Peace Development Fund and all of the money raised from this fundraiser will be added to that grant to help support their organizing in 2020.  Please consider making a contribution today to support them and read more about their work below.

"We organize people directly impacted by the carceral state including people in jail or prison and their loved ones in the community; people who have previously been arrested, under community supervision (probation or parole), or incarcerated; and people who have been pushed out of school due to harsh discipline policies. Our members are disproportionately Black and Brown and poor or working class.

We imagine a world without police and prisons, where schools nurture children of color rather than criminalizing them. This is a world without white supremacy or any form of oppression and where economic freedom is possible for everyone. It is a world where safety is measured by the availability and quality of resources in a community, not the number of police officers patrolling its streets and schools. We envision a world Unchained."

Unchained COVID-19 Response:

"As an organization led by people behind bars and their loved ones, Unchained has been on the front lines of the pandemic in jails and prisons. With our partners across the state, we have won the release of more than 700 people detained on technical parole violations and are fighting for thousands more to be sent home where they belong. We are also working to ensure that people left behind are able to communicate with their loved ones frequently since visits have been suspended indefinitely, and that incarcerated people have access to adequate hygiene and cleaning supplies and quality medical care."
