 Change Comes Now

Mission

Change Comes Now organizes with women, girls, and their loved ones who have been, those who are in danger of being, and those who are currently impacted by the criminal justice system by educating, empowering, and mobilizing our communities.

Change Comes Now has received a Community Organizing Grant from the Peace Development Fund and all of the money raised from this fundraiser will be added to that grant to help support their organizing in 2021.  Please consider making a contribution today to support them and read more about their work below.

Request

1.  Community Organizing to raise awareness about alternatives to incarceration, failure of prisons to address underlying issues, DOC staff support for drug, physical, and sexual abuse of incarcerated women, etc. This includes the Lowell Correctional Institute prison closure campaign, based upon the abusive conditions experienced by incarcerated women and girls. Methods: socially distant gatherings, virtual meetings with community leaders, and online webinars. CCN’s solid relationships with print, online, television, and radio media outlets will increase our reach.

2.  Participatory Defense: Use Silicon Valley De-Bug’s organizing model to build family and community support for women in hyper policed areas facing charges.

3.  COVID-19 Strategic Response: Shine a light on the failure of Florida’s DOC to take proactive steps to safeguard the health of incarcerated women and girls.

4.  Civil Lien Conversion: Once released, formerly incarcerated women are unable to vote or get a driver’s license if they owe any money. If monies owed are converted to civil liens, women can make their voices heard by participating in the political process – including joining organizing campaigns. In addition, they are more likely to access employment, health care services and childcare.

5. Clemency: Provide packets explaining eligibility, requirements, and the application to incarcerated women.
