Mission

DecARcerate is a nonprofit working to affirm human dignity by confronting unjust systems. We envision a world where equity, healing, and reconciliation replace systems of punishment and oppression.

Decarcerate, Inc, has received a Community Organizing Grant from the Peace Development Fund and all of the money raised from this fundraiser will be added to that grant to help support their organizing in 2021.  Please consider making a contribution today to support them and read more about their work below.

DecARcerate works to end mass incarceration in Arkansas through community education, smart legislation, advocacy, and empowering the leadership of individuals personally affected by the criminal punishment system. We employ all four strategies in order to achieve our current campaign goals to end solitary confinement and reform bail, fines, and fees in Arkansas.

Our Campaign to End Solitary is producing digital storytelling materials to help educate the public and our Campaign to Curb Criminal Justice Debt is observing court proceedings to collect data on the unfair assessment of bail and fines in circuit courts; both are building a base to mobilize Arkansans to educate and advocate on behalf of carceral reform during the 2021 legislative session.

We also are currently developing a trauma-informed community organizing curriculum that will help create and support an impacted leadership pipeline to build capacity for sustainable and long-term reform efforts.

Finally, we are responding to the current COVID-19 crisis by raising awareness and organizing impacted and invested individuals to hold public institutions, such as the legislature and Arkansas Department of Corrections (ADC), accountable to the people who are affected by their actions.

How is Decarcerate, Inc, helping thei community work toward justice through the COVID-19 pandemic?

"During the COVID-19 crisis, DecARcerate has worked alongside local and national media, lawyers, and directly impacted individuals (both currently and formerly incarcerated) to expose, educate, and resist the Arkansas Department of Correction's lack of response to the pandemic. By utilizing online platforms we have advocated for the release of those suffering behind bars."
