Mission

Coal River Mountain Watch’s mission is to stop the destruction of our communities and environment by mountaintop removal mining, to improve the quality of life in our area, and to help rebuild sustainable communities.

Coal River Mountain Watch has received a Community Organizing Grant from the Peace Development Fund and all of the money raised from this fundraiser will be added to that grant to help support their organizing in 2020.  Please consider making a contribution today to support them and read more about their work below.

CRMW intends to resume our pre-pandemic work in 2021. While we've stepped back to protect the health of our staff and families, the giant coal company Alpha Metallurgical Resources has continued blasting our mountain, emitting carcinogenic fallout into the air our community breathes. Our office manager/Tadpole Project organizer is dealing with the long-term effects of Covid-19, while still trying to protect her husband, a retired miner with black lung. We will resume hosting student groups and journalists, attending hearings when necessary, meeting with government representatives to advocate for just policy, and organizing residents for group activities.

CRMW will continue to monitor mountaintop removal (MTR) coal mining permits in the area, particularly those on and around Coal River Mountain. We will continue organizing neighbors to resist new permits, submit complaints for violations, and follow up.

CRMW's Tadpole Project will resume community cleanup days. We organize local residents, sometimes including visiting student groups, to clean up the trash and junk from area streams, hollows, and roadsides, and include picnic and river recreation opportunities. In previous years, we've hosted a used tire drop-off where community members have turned in over a thousand tires that would have otherwise gone into streams and illegal dumps.

How is Coal River Mountain Watch helping their community work toward justice through the COVID-19 pandemic?

"The COVID-19 pandemic has added another layer of deadly health threats to those already imposed by the carcinogenic clouds of blasting dust from mountaintop removal sites. Coal River Mountain Watch has continued to monitor and oppose this deadly practice, engaging coal companies and state agencies to speak out and fight back for our communities that are misinformed, marginalized, and sacrificed."
